Business Ethics
The concept of social responsibility involves the manner in which a business or a company responds to the society, environment or the economy so as to benefit the society. Social responsibility should be done willingly, and business leaders should be involved in engaging in activities that ensure that the needs of the society are met. Company Q current attitude towards social responsibility is negative, and all of their actions towards the society are not focused on meeting the needs of the society.
While company Q has been operational in a metropolitan area and with several stores to their name, their attitude toward social responsibility has been very negative. For example, the company has recently closed a couple of stores in higher-crime-rate areas of the city, reportedly because these two stores were consistently losing money. Even though the store was consistently losing money, the company should have sought a measure that would address the issue of money being lost instead of closing the stores. Theft should not have pushed the company to close the stores, especially now that many customers were depending on the stores.
Another instance when the company has shown a negative attitude towards social responsibility is when after years of requests from customers, the company has started offering a very limited amount of health-conscience and organic products. Since the customers requested for these products, the company should have offered more of the products so as to meet the needs of the people. The company probably offered the products at very limited amounts because they were high margin items. However, this is a very small price to pay in ensuring that the basic needs of the people were met.
The company also had a negative attitude when asked by the area’s food bank for donation of day-old products. The company’s management declined, deciding instead to throw the food away, citing worries over lost revenues due to possible fraud and stealing by employees who might say they are donating the food. It is so unfortunate that the company decided to throw away food even after the area’s food bank for donation asked for some food. It is also unfortunate the company felt like donating food would have made their employees to commit fraud or even steal in the name of donating food. This shows that the company thinks lowly of the community and its employees as well.
In order to improve the Company Q’s attitude towards social responsibility, the company improve its relationship with the surrounding community. The company can start by first reopening the closed stores in the higher-crime-rate areas. In order to address the crime issue that led to the closure of the stores, the company should join with the local community and the local security personnel to come up with ways of addressing insecurity. The store could even hire more security personnel or even install security gadgets to help in identifying the criminals.
Another action that would improve the company’s attitude towards social responsibility is to offer more of the health-conscience and organic products that the customers have been requesting for. The company does not need to overstock their stores with these products but just meet the demands of the customer. Another appropriate action would be for Company Q to donate food to the area’s food bank instead of throwing food away. Instead of having a negative attitude about what this action would have on the employees, the company should engage the employees in the food donation activity. For instance, the company could use some of its employees to help the area’s food bank in serving food to the less fortunate.
